About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a dynamically evolving therapy where the underlying principles can be traced back over 2,000 years to early Chinese medical texts. The theory and practice of acupuncture is part of an East Asian Medical tradition where maintenance of good health is based on the harmonious balance of an internal life force (Qi). This balance is influenced by external and internal environmental factors, with pain, discomfort or ill-health indicating signs of disharmony. The holistic principle that all body systems are interrelated whether physical, mental, or emotional, also emphasises the individuality of treatments. Acupuncturists address the root causes of ill health, as well as alleviating symptoms, to restore balance through the insertion of very thin sterile needles at specific points to stimulate the body’s natural repair system.

A physical examination and range of movement tests or blood pressure check may also be necessary. During the treatment, very thin, sterile disposable needles are inserted into specific acupoints and remain in place for 20-30mins whilst you relax. Cupping or moxibustion may also be included in your treatment.
